Soldering with Watts Next

  • Bright Box Makerspace 18 Exchange Street Sheffield S2 5TS (map)

Climate change, Energy and Migration. Join our planet based workshops and learn how to build a solar powered phone charger for refugees!

About this Event

We all sometimes feel intimidated by getting involved in society's big conversations and can be left wondering... watts next?

We want to empower you to make a difference!

Do you feel in the dark about climate change, energy and migration issues?

Watts next is here to shed some light on how our actions impact the planet and in turn, contribute to changes in migration. But we want to take a more hands on approach - so you’ll be making a 8V/5W solar panel charger from scratch! The panels will then be donated to refugees in Europe, who can use it to charge their phones.

Learn how to solder, wire and make a positive impact - all in an afternoon!

When is the workshop?

Saturday 27th April, 1pm-3:30pm

Who can attend?

No prior experience with making is necessary for the workshop, we want you to try something new!

This workshop is aimed at adults (18+), as the soldering can be quite tricky.

However, if you would like to bring along someone younger who would enjoy the workshop, have a chat with one of our organisers and we'll see what we can do.

What should I bring?

Just yourselves! There will be light refreshments provided at the workshop but if you'd like to bring some snacks along too, feel free.

How can I contact the organiser?

If you have any questions or would like more information, email our team -

Why do we charge?

The £26 you pay for the workshop covers some of the cost for the components of the solar panel, room hire, equipment hire and insurance. We crowdfund the rest, so that we can make this workshop cheaper and more accessible. If you wish to donate so that we can run more workshops, get more people building panels and spread our message, please contact the organisers (or donate and read our story here).
